Zanzibar Cafe is new to Uptown. It's located in the old Sawatdee Express place next to Stella's. I've seen the sign up for a while but I was happy to find out they've finally opened for business! Went for lunch on a Friday around noon. I was pleasantly surprised! First off, the aromas coming from this restaurant are to die for! The heavy spice scent is warm and inviting. There is a gyro spit is rotating near the place where you order and left my mouth watering! The menu is full of African, Indian, Asian fusion dishes that all sounded delicious it was hard for me to decide! I ended up going with the Chicken Sukkar dish. The menu had an obscure description of it saying "Chicken with a Korean sauce and African spices." I wasn't quite sure what this meant so I asked the cook who happily obliged to answer all my questions. He explained it as curry spices over a bed of basmati rice. Of course, he explained it a lot better than I could ever do justice but all in all, it sounded right up my alley. The food is cooked right out in the open and it was fun watching the cook make my food. He took great care to ensure the spice level was right and even used a spice grinder for freshness! I was thoroughly impressed with the time he spent making the dish perfect. All the while, he was chatting with me and asking questions which made it seem that much more inviting. I truly hope this place thrives in the future. I can't wait to go back!!
